It is the branch of science that deals with the surrounding tissues of the tooth, their diseases and treatments.
What is Gum Disease?
It is inflammation of the tissues around the tooth. This inflammation can affect only the gum, or it can affect both the gum and the bone surrounding the tooth. When it is limited only to the gums, the disease is called gingivitis, and when it involves both gums and bone, it is called periodontitis. Gingivitis is a reversible disease when good oral hygiene is provided. However, the tissues lost in periodontitis cannot be restored. Only inflammation is treated, some measures can be taken to protect the existing tissues.
What are the Symptoms of Gum Disease?
- Red, swollen gums that bleed during brushing or spontaneously.
- Sensitivity of the teeth
- Persistent bad odour in the mouth
- Teeth swaying and gaps between them
- Discharge from pockets between the tooth and surrounding tissues
What Causes Gum Disease?
The cause of gum disease is bacterial plaque and tartar accumulated on the teeth. However, these deposits can be prevented if the teeth are well brushed and the interface is cleaned. In other words, the biggest cause of gum disease is poor oral hygiene. Stress, genetic factors, some systemic disorders can also play a role as accelerating factors.
How is the Treatment of Gum Disease?
The patient is educated so that the tartar, plaque and inflammatory tissues formed in the soft tissue that cause the disease are completely removed and oral hygiene is fully provided. In advanced cases, some surgical interventions may be required.
