Composite filling is an aesthetic filling material that can be chemically bonded to the tooth unlike amalgam fillings. It is made by placing layer by layer composite material into the cavity after the decay is cleaned and freezing it with a special light each time. After the excesses are removed and shaped, it should be polished very well with special discs and rubbers, which is important both aesthetically and in terms of the longevity of the filling.
What are the Advantages of Amalgam Fillings?
Amalgam does not stick to the tooth, it is only mechanically attached. Therefore, even in a small decay, larger cavities should be prepared and the material should be removed from the intact tooth tissue. But since the composite can adhere to the tooth, it is sufficient to remove only the decay.
Mercury in amalgam is a substance that has a toxic (poisonous) effect for the body. It is not found in composite.
Since amalgam fillings are grey in colour, they give an unpleasant appearance in the mouth, but composites are often indistinguishable from natural teeth.
Amalgam fillings are a mixture of many metals. If a person has more than one amalgam filling and prostheses made of different metals, they can cause an unwanted and uncomfortable current called galvanic current in the mouth.
